This is the diary of a young girl - Maro Makashvili, through which she, on the one hand, shares us about her attitude towards the current political events and on the other hand, tells us about her personal life, her thoughts, emotions, feelings, dreams... For example, how she wanted to learn languages, go abroad, study there in order to return and do something for her homeland, - - "I shall go to France or to Italy to study… to serve my nation…... I really, really want to be in Paris... what could stop me?” – wrote a young student of Tbilisi University in her diary. Only two years later, a cruel fate interrupted the European dreams of the young girl. On February 17, 1921, as the Red Army forces approached Tbilisi, Maro joined the war effort as a Sister of Mercy and a Red Cross volunteer. She was killed by Russian artillery shell, on February 19 on the front line at Kojori, near Tbilisi. She was the first victim woman of the struggle for the independence of the motherland.
Titsian Tabidze delivered a word on Maro’s funeral: “As if the sanctity blessed the first Georgian front with an innocent blood and that of Mariam. Love of the motherland will create a lot more shadows and patriotism of Jana Dark and even more miracles."
Maro Makashvili became the first woman to be awarded the title of National Hero of Georgia.
